The Experience

About The Project

I've attended a predominately white institution since kindergarten, and over the years I noticed how different my experience at school was from those of my white counterparts. In light of feeling this way, I decided to create a project depicting the experiences and thoughts of other students of color at predominantly white institutions throughout the Tri-State area.

"I have always been mindful of what I say and do. I don't mind it that much, but a certain side of me is often hidden, and I don't want it to be lost"

“Sometimes school feels isolating and scary, but other times it feels like home, and on some level, it feels like I would be lost without it. I always seem to ask myself, "Why am I here?", "Am I even good enough for this place?" and "What will today be like?” "

“I've always felt the pressure of running a race designed for people who look like me -- one created soley to encourage black excelence. It is a race that not only tells me that I have to be the best to combat the stereotypes ingrained in the minds of my white counterparts, but also one that promises it will lead me to the success my parents always prayed I would have"

" Being a person of color in a predominantly white community has taught me to value my identity and keep my roots close, but has also encouraged or forced me to see the world through multiple lenses. Being isolated and out of my comfort zone pushed me to be relentless and strong. At the end of the day, I am grateful for this experience because you can't truly learn about yourself if everyone around you is the same. "
